Night Blooming Cereus Enjoyed
WALMORE - Twelve blossoms burst into bloom last night on the Night Blooming Cereus of Mrs. John Pfohl, of the Walmore road, and a large crowd of neighbors and friends were present. This evening more blooms should appear on the 12-year-old stalk. This is the first time that as many as a dozen blossoms have appeared at one time. Young plants usually have only one or two flowers at a time, Mrs. Pfohl said. The flowers averaged seven inches in diameter. The cereus is a plant having leaves like a rubber plant propagated by slips. A new plant will grow even from a fragment of a leaf. The blossoms appear only for a short time at night. Some have been known to appear on following nights. Other small buds are expected to break open on the Pfohl specimen. Mrs. Pfohl attributed the profuse blooms to the intense heat.
